The Storm of the Century

Well, we finally had the storm of all storms. We get our share of wind and snow, but this storm was outrageous. It started on Thursday afternoon and we had to have the parents pick the kids up at school. There was zero visibility and 60 mile an hour winds or more. Some parents got lost coming to school. Some made it but then couldn't make it home and had to come back. Four of us came together over to our apartments and the normally 1 minute walk took 10-15 minutes. It was intense. If I had been alone and not being held up by Sue, I would have definitely been lost. The snow was above my knee and every time you stepped you went to the bottom and then had to step all the way back out. The storm raged all night and people ended up staying at the school because they couldn't get home. Several people stayed at other people's houses because they couldn't find their own house. A teacher in St. Michael got lost on his way home and ended up digging a snow cave. He didn't get found until 12:30 am, when someone got their snow machine stuck near him and he went to them for help. Jesse is in Norvik so he missed all the fun. As you can see from the picture the doors don't actually keep the snow out when the wind is blowing that hard. This is a picture of our arctic porch.
Anyway, Jesse's team is out of the regional tournament. They beat Savoonga and then lost to Norvik and Selawik. If the weather cooperates they will be home tomorrow. We are supposed to get a lot more snow tomorrow so we will just have to wait and see. Part of the athletic director duties are to pick the teams up at the airport and when Jesse travels I have to do it. I won't be picking them up tomorrow because our school truck and hondas are snowed in the shed and the roads aren't plowed. It will be a long walk for some of them with all of their stuff. I just hope they get home before the next storm hits.
It's a count down now for me. I can't wait for my mom to come and then to go home. Yipee!
See you all soon!

After reading this post, we won't complain about our Wisconsin winters. Hope you're feeling well and best wishes.
