Still Winter

Well, we showed you what it was like to grocery shop in the bush during the fall, now you can get an idea of what it is like in the winter. Technically it should be considered spring right now, but it was 5 degrees this morning and there is still a ton of snow on the ground. As long as it is above 20 degrees we can usually make the trip to St. Michael. We tried to go last Saturday but it was snowing sideways, the road was covered in drifts that we couldn't pass and it was white out conditions. Needless to say, we didn't make it very far before we turned back. We went on Tuesday instead and it has been 3 lovely days of fresh milk and salad.
On another note we are supposed to run out of water in the next week. They should start hauling water soon, but apparently the truck is not running. My thought is that they should start working on the truck now, before we run out of water, but that is definitely not how they do it up here.
We are happy to inform you that we only have 5 weeks of school left. We have decided to make a mini vacation of our trip home so we will take a more scenic route and spend about 10 days heading home. We are going to fly into Anchorage and spend a few days there. We will probably go down to the Kenai Pennisula and maybe even up to Denali National Park. After that we will head to Juneau where we will spend another few days. We will finish the trip by taking a ferry from Juneau to Bellingham. We will stop in Sitka and Ketchikan and a few other places on the way. We are really looking forward to the trip and being back in civilization.
Can't wait to see you all!

And we thought our winter was brutal here in Wisconsin this winter! Good luck in the closing days of the school year. Sue and I will be visiting Alaska via a Princess land tour and cruise beginning in mid-May. We've enjoyed reading your blog and look forward to particiapting in the "Flat Stanley" project.
