Another weekend of Volleyball has come and gone. The picture above is from the tournament in Unalakleet last weekend. This weekend we got to host a home tournament with Shishmareff and Savoonga. The teams came in Friday night and left Sunday morning. It is a lot of work for the staff to host a game because we have to house and feed the other teams. We also have to ref, keep score, run the scoreboard etc. It was fun to have something new to do this weekend and it was great for the parents to see the kids play. The concession stand drew a far larger crowd than the games but we still had a few fans. Two of my boys were gone this weekend so we struggled a little. We lost 2 matches to Shishmareff but we beat Savoonga twice. We will be traveling to White Mountain in a few weeks and then on to Golovin for the district tournament where the top two teams will head to state in Anchorage.
Tomorrow we leave for a 4 day inservice in Unalakleet. We get to spend a few nights sleeping on the floor in a classroom with our entire staff. Needless to say we are all excited about it. :0) However, it will be nice to get a break from the kids and have a change of scenery.
We have been trying to see the Northern Lights lately but we haven't had much luck. The kids say that they happen later in the winter and that they come in all colors. The told us that we will know when they are here because all of the kids will gather outside and whistle at them. Except if they are red. We were told that if you whistle at a red Northern Light then it will come and get you. There are lots of superstitions up here.
Anyway, we are really looking forward to being home for Thanksgiving. It can't come soon enough!
Miss you!

Congrats Kate on winning 2 of your 4 games! You should play the lottery. Sounds like these tournaments really keep you busy, but it's neat how it becomes a real community thing (meals, scorekeeping, etc.). It's a real demonstration of how the meaning goes way beyond the game itself.
If you do see the Northern Lights, take photos. I've always wanted to see them!
Take care guys - Josh
P.S. Go Red Sox!
