Days before school

Hello,
School has almost begun and we are working overtime in order to get ready for kids who will be here on Monday. Besides teaching classes Kate has accepted a volleyball coaching position and I have accepted the basketball position at the high school.

Today we drove to Saint Michael, a small bush village 10 miles from Stebbins. We caravaned on four wheelers with most of our staff including our principal. Saint Michael has a quality store including fresh vegetables and fruit, something that we cannot get at the store here in Stebbins. Other news includes bear sightings outside of town. As we drove to Saint Michael, Kate and I where on the lookout for our first Brown Bear which we were not fortunate enough to see. We are told that it is common to see bear, Caribou and Reindeer during the drive.

Yesterday Kate went berry picking with some local kids. They found blueberries that tasted a lot like huckleberries and some salmon berries. The kids know all about what is okay to eat and where to pick. The kids are extremely friendly and always want to be around you. Because it stays light until late we often find them knocking on our door long after 10:00. They always want to come in and "visit" and use the bathroom. They don't have running water in the village so they kids really enjoy going to school even if it is just to use the bathroom, washup and eat.

I am sure that we will have much more to report after school starts on Monday.

Hi
The school looks great. It sounds like you're doing a lot with the community. I'm sure things will even be busier as school starts. The volleyball should be interesting since I'm assuming you'll be flying different places to compete. Have fun, take care and learn lots.
Love,
Mom

Hi Guys:

It looks like you are having some great experiences. Making memories to last a lifetime and many stories
to tell later.
I'm looking foward to coming to see you in October whether in Stebbins or Anchorage. My cast is off and I'm improving health wise. Who knows I may scare a bear when we come up.
Love you, Myrn
